The project covers the complete renovations of the old building and the expansion of the Hotel in the northern side of the property. The new wooden construction, evoking the traditional Engadin’s barn, hides behind the existing buildings. The walls of the new suites are covered with arolla pine and larch wood and the bathrooms are realized in soapstone. The underground spaces, once used as winery, will become the new hotel Spa with hammam, sauna at the ground floor. The new hall’s structure with two long skylights supports the installation “Steingarten” by artist Letizia Cariello, is a moraine of grey-greenrocks and steel balls suggesting the theme of water in the High Engadine landscape. The other installation “ Wind is blowing in my direction” consists of five steel trees lining in front of the new glass and wooden façade of the Hotel. The trees play music thanks to a device activated by the wind along Via Maistra. Through different languages Art and Architecture build upon each other without misunderstandings expressing an intimate relationship with the site and highlighting the wonderful power of the surrounding Nature.
L’Hotel Stuva Colani, è un edificio storico che si trova nel centro di Madulain, il paese più piccolo dell’Engadina a 13 Km da St Moritz. Nel 1968 l’Hotel, costituito originariamente da due edifici paralleli e inizialmente utilizzato quale sede dell’ Azienda vinicola “Veltliner Weine Romedi”, venne ristrutturato e successivamente nel 1984 ampliato realizzando un corpo di fabbrica alto un piano nel cortile tra i due edifici. Si apportano modifiche minime alla distribuzione interna dell’edificio esistente: il Ristorante viene ampliato riportando alla luce la parte originaria dell’edificio , le camere con affaccio su Via Maistra e accesso indipendente vengono fuse in grandi suite, le attuali camere doppie con piccoli bagni annessi vengono trasformate in junior-suite. Il progetto prevede inoltre il rifacimento della copertura della Hall d’ingresso con due lunghi lucernari che lasciano intravedere le due facciate degli edifici attigui e la realizzazione di una facciata vetrata su via Maistra. Parte dei locali interrati un tempo utilizzati come cantina del vino vengono trasformati in SPA (bagno turco, sauna) con al piano superiore una piscina coperta a livello del giardino. L’edificio in ampliamento, previsto a Nord del lotto, di circa 500 mq di superficie lorda complessiva e rivestito completamente in legno, come in diversi esempi visibili in Engadina, si dispone in coda agli edifici esistenti; uno “spacco” vetrato alto e stretto interrompe la lunghezza dei fronti Est ed Ovest e lascia un intervallo di rispetto tra vecchio e nuovo.
