1997 · New Building for IUAV in Venice

The competition included the renovation of the Cold Stores to be allocated to University Institute of Architecture of Venice (IUAV) and some services to be made available in the city. The arrangement of the buildings in the building project is a continuation of the plot of lots of the nearby Sestriere Dorsoduro. The building, inside and outside, is divided into three by two parallel paths similar to calluses that pass through it longitudinally from north to south on all floors. At the center is defined as a space-to-ceiling glass roof and similar in proportions, courtyards and squares of Venice. On the ground floor are located the library, a conference hall with 100 seats, a multi-purpose auditorium with 500 seats divided into two rooms, a bar, a restaurant and an exhibition space directly accessible from the outside. The 12 classrooms and seminar rooms are located on the first and second floor with favorable exposure to the East and West. The cladding of the facades in brick with white stone string courses recalls the Byzantine architecture of the Church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli and that of the neighboring nineteenth-century industrial buildings overlooking the Giudecca Canal which the former cotton mill and the Mulino Stucky Venice
