Premise.
The isle Virginia on the lake (387 m) lies in the municipality of Biandronno (VA) despite being owned by the Municipality of Varese and has an area of about 9,200 square meters. The land on the west side of Isolino is about 20 meters.
The isle Virginia and ‘an important center for prehistoric archeology at European level and for the city of Varese is a heritage that should be better exploited.
Currently sull’isolino, in the cottage belonged to Virginia Bridges, there is a museum opened in 1974 (detachment of the Civic Museums of Villa Mirabello in Varese) in which houses several artifacts found mainly as a result of the excavations Bertolone of 1957.
Reasons initiative and cultural objectives.
The findings and studies of prehistoric archeology gave rise to the first Museum of the city of Varese. For aspects of environmental, historical and educational isolate the could become a real focal point of interest for Varese and beyond. The initiative shown below, divided into its various aspects, with the aim of enhancing the Virginia Island so that it becomes one of the major cultural attractions of the province of Varese.
Discovery and exploitation of existing artifacts sull’isolino.
At the center of the island aims to bring back to light the remains of the wooden decks (about 3000 BC) unearthed after the excavations Bertolone of 1957 but later reinterred. It is therefore proposed to build a structure or structures of shelter for artifacts, structures which must be recognizable in the character and in the materials used (such as lightweight structures in iron and glass-like greenhouses) imitating certain aspects of the shape and size of hypothetical of the huts that stood sull’isolino. Similarly, it is proposed to bring to light, to preserve and enhance “on site” any other findings that may be discovered in subsequent drilling operations.
Philological reconstruction – some hypothetical prehistoric buildings.
Next to scientific work and of preservation Isolino proposes the accurate reconstruction of some buildings and hypothetical similar to those which belonged the prehistoric Isolino. This is possible thanks to the interesting discoveries made during the excavations and the evidence presented to us about how our ancestors lived. Obviously you do not yet know everything and then the reconstruction would mostly hypothetical in nature and primarily a didactic purpose. It will imitate as much as possible the size, orientation, and the constructive elements of the huts. It is not necessary to place these reconstructions exactly those found in the site, although in itself might be a strong and evocative. These could, however, also arise at a certain distance by finds Isolino, for example on the nearby shores of Biandronno. This issue does not affect our opinion in the sense of reconstruction, which should have the character of example and not mere copy “on site”. Similar operations have been completed, successfully, in some archeological sites in Switzerland (Berne) and in some areas of Northern Italy, as in Boario Terme to work of dr. Aid Priuli.
Filmic and photographic documentation.
The main steps of this digging, planting and hypothetical reconstruction may be documented with photographs and filming to be an aid to teaching and exhibition. The photographs, videos, etc.. will be made available to scholars and the public and will be an important aspect of the disclosure.
Proposal for temporary buildings for educational and scenic sull’isolino Virginia and the nearby banks.
In addition to the hypothetical reconstruction of primitive dwellings proposed for placement in special places on the island of temporary structures designed to support the exhibitions and education. Such structures could be the new pedestrian paths that link specific locations Isolino and the neighboring shores, piers, fences, retaining structures etc.. The structure of these elements will be planned and designed in such a way as to protect the soil and flora Isolino, and will easily smantellabile if necessary, so as not to hinder the activities of archaeological research. These elements may also act, (as well as hypothetical reconstructions of the huts) from set design for any shows and events to support the initiative (see chap. 10).
The rediscovery of the origins of architecture and dwelling.
The discovery, development and hypothetical reconstruction of prehistoric artifacts is an amazing and powerful way to awaken emotions (eg, the unique excitement of an archaeological discovery) belonging to the original conditions of living. The return to the simple hut, which probably derive from the model and are imagined space and the elements of architecture, is an essential step in understanding how architecture is born and has developed from the use of necessary forms, starting from ‘imitation of nature.
It is no coincidence that the Enlightenment in France, where they were rediscovered the primary values of human reason, it is also much discussion about the origins of architecture, and that what the “cottage” has been one of the most explored and discussed, as is the famous essay by MA Laugier “Essai sur l’architcture” of 1753. We believe that this issue can be interesting and can be challenging to discuss it and explore it today.
The new archaeological park. Accessibility and traffic.
For better enjoyment by the public should be put in relation to communication and the various archaeological sites sprung up over the last few decades (Pizzo di Bodio, Cazzago Brabbia, etc.). Around the lake of Varese through existing paths with the use of signs. The intention is to create a real archaeological park, ideal for teaching, for the observation and study of ‘environment, as well as further incentive for tourist activity.
To this end, it may be desirable lean to the path of the newly pedestrian and cycle track around the lake of Varese. They will also be enhanced accommodation facilities, the chances of stopping and parking, etc.., So as to facilitate the accessibility Isolino Virginia and the nearby shores of the lake.
